Upper Payette Camping, Warren, and the road to California (Anxiety) Lake

We went camping away from home this time. About an hour drive north takes us to Upper Payette Lake. We pulled in to search for a site around 10:30pm. Setting up a tent in the dark and then needing to make dinner at 10:30pm is not my idea of a good start! The following day, the kids got to go fishing.

I  caught a butterfly.

Joseph was able to zoom in and get a nice closeup!

We weren't able to get a camp site next to the water, so we drove a minute or two down the road to get to the creek coming into the lake.

Joseph doesn't find camping very relaxing when he has to
untangle lines or put on new hooks every 2-3 minutes!

Blake forgot his hat. Luckily Mom had a spare to share!

Blaire wanted to fish from the bridge.

...then back where we were camped out...

...then back up to the bridge with Blake!

From the bridge, I saw a frog...toad? swimming. Joseph grabbed the bucket and caught him.
Eventually we let him go, but he had to have his first photo shoot first!

Blake accidentally caught the tail of a little fish.
It was his first ever catch though, so it was pretty exciting!

It's not really camping unless you take a bath while you're there. Joseph helped me wash my hair on Saturday night. Then he helped me to wash Blaire's next. Of course we heated the lake water on the stove top!

Braiding Blaire's hair before S'Mores

The perfect S'more... not burnt but perfectly browned marshmellow on a rock heated cracker with melted chocolate!

"Mom can I cuddle with you?"
"Yes. Are you tired?"
"No, I haven't yawned yet."
... minutes later she was asleep...

And then she was the first one awake to come get in bed with us and wake Daddy.

After leaving the campsite, we headed North to Warren. We scouted out more camping sites for future use, but didn't really find anything worth coming back for.

After leaving Warren, we took a road to get to California Lake. The road got increasingly narrow and rockier as we drove. There were no signs indicating anything other than that the lake was ahead 6 miles.

With nowhere to turn around, the road continued up and up and narrower and narrower. We eventually came across some parties who were forced to turn around and back up to a place on the road big enough for them to fit and us to squeeze by.

Finally, probably a matter of tens of feet, we hit a road wide enough to pull over and turn around. We did so, ate lunch, then headed back for real roads. All in all, I don't recommend this trip as it will make your anxiety spike and one may be unhappy with the situation/their spouse for the duration of the wild ride!
We did not make it to the lake.
We were very relieved to make it back to the main gravel road without punctured tires from the insanely rocky road we'd been on. These roads were not meant for vehicles wider than a side by side, and someone definitely needs to mark the road at its entrance letting us know!!
